KHOU 11 Television Inc., a Gannett-owned CBS affiliate in Houston, TX, is seeking a highly experienced individual with a distinct skill set to join our team as a Digital Content Producer. This person will edit and produce digital content for all KHOU digital platforms. The ideal candidate displays a demonstrated passion and in-depth knowledge of digital audiences to produce a rich content experience across all digital platforms, including social media. The shift for this position is Wednesday – Sunday, from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
This role is responsible for ensuring all digital content meets established tone, theme, accuracy, style and consistency requirements of KHOU.com.
Key responsibilities include:
Take command and bring fresh ideas to the job each day and communicate these effectively. Build trust and foster community in a fast-paced environment of continuously updated news.
Possess advanced news writing experience and news judgment; excellent English grammar, organizational skills and execution of AP print style journalism.
Produce high-quality content, encode video, develop slideshows and other unique content categories to grow the digital product offerings.
Demonstrated success with social media. Collaborates with colleagues on the best way to use social media to connect and engage with a TV audience and to drive users back to legacy properties.
On Weekends, works closely with Assignments Desk for identifying stories and content to be published. Must also monitor the Houston sports stories on weekends.
Function as an active participant in the KHOU Editorial meetings.
Have a strong knowledge of SEO/SEM is required to champion SEO optimization efforts.
Develop photo slideshows from KHOU 11 video content, Getty images, USAT and other colleagues.
Proficiency with the following digital tools (or similar) including the Limelight content management system, mobile push notifications, SMS text messaging, breaking news emails, video publishing, AP wire feeds, ENPS and basic html.
Collaborate closely with the News and Digital teams regarding consistency of content to post.
Helps monitor KHOU social media accounts for fan questions and feedback, and respond accordingly.
Monitor industry trends and competitors, and surfaces best practices to implement here.
Update headlines for all content sections on KHOU.com including Local, National, World, Entertainment, Political, Community, Sports, etc.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated, a strong communicator, highly-engaged and helps develop on-brand, on-strategy and compelling copy with very minimal supervision. Knowledge of the Houston sports scene will be required for weekend news coverage. We are seeking an innovator who consistently generates new ideas to move our efforts forward. The ideal candidate must pass a writing test for this position. The ability to be flexible with department scheduling, breaking news, on-call assignments and filling in for others is a must.
•BA/BS in Journalism, English, Communications or related area or equivalent experience.
•Minimum 3 years experience in online journalism.
•Work as a highly collaborative member of a digital editorial team.
•Exceptional creative writing and copy editing skills and ability to communicate ideas clearly.
•Self-directed and naturally curious with the commitment to produce results quickly.
•Experience creating and managing content.
•Excellent communication skills, both internal and external, in one-on-one settings or with large groups, and with people at all levels of the organization.
•Demonstrate a deep understanding of the product, target audience and competitor activities.
•Excellent writer able to communicate complex issues in lively, clear, and concise prose.
